Hello Pastor Lily
Should Christian women wear pants or trousers? I appreciate your answers to Christian women wearing makeup and getting tattoos, but I was wondering what you think about the issue of women wearing pants, especially into the house of God.
I’m so glad you asked. I see a lot of women coming to church these days in these tiny skirts that are barely more than a belt. Sometimes I’ll ask them if they think that such a short skirt is appropriate for church. Because personally, I don’t!
Many times I’ve been told that they chose to wear that mini-skirt because the bible says that women shouldn’t wear pants. I’ve asked them to show me where in the Bible it says this, but no one has been able to find the verse.
But the Bible does say this;
“A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this“. -Deuteronomy 22:5
In many legalistic churches, this has been enforced as a rule that women should only wear dresses and skirts.
However, there’s nothing in the Bible about wearing pants. Because when this law was written, no one was wearing pants. They hadn’t been invented yet.
Pants become popular because it’s very challenging to ride a horse in a robe. So men adopted the fashion first and women adopted it shortly afterward.
Prior to that men and women, both wore long tunics and the style was very similar for both. Here’s a good picture. Men don’t own the style because there are pants for both sexes. And the cut, design, and style are different for both.
Personally, I view women’s pants as a very practical and modest clothing option. As a Christian mom, I want to have freedom of mobility and pants provide that in a way that skirts and dresses sometimes don’t.
However, I almost always wear a dress or skirt to church on Sunday. But not because there’s some rule that says I have to. I wear them because I like to. And, if there’s any question of a skirt being too short, or a strong breeze catching me off guard, I wear leggings underneath.
To me, Deuteronomy 22:5 is about being authentic and being yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Don’t be deceptive.
In choosing your clothes, I believe that a Christian woman should ask herself;
- Does what I’m wearing honor God?
- Is it modest or revealing?
- Am I knowingly causing someone else to lust after me by what I’m wearing?
That last question is key. Let’s be honest, we all have a mirror and it can be very tempting to justify wearing an outfit because we know we look sexy. But ladies, please, let’s save the sexy stuff for our husbands. Church is not the right place for some of these things.
But also, please don’t judge!
A lot of new Christian women come to church and they simply don’t own “modest apparel” and they’re making due with what they’ve got. If all you’ve got in your closet is bar clothes, then wear your bar clothes. Honestly. As sisters in Christ, we will figure out the rest later. Right now, that woman needs to know the love and salvation of Christ. Too many people walk into the church looking for help and immediately feel judged and intimidated.
The time will come when older women in Christ can sit down in a loving and gentle way and help a lady find a style that is more befitting of who she is as a new creation. But that happens later, privately and with love and kindness.
Styles are changing. Today I see men wearing flowy floral shirts that my grandmother would have worn as a blouse just a few years ago. My husband bought himself a pair of skinny jeans for the first time last, and it wasn’t very when the only guys wearing those were in rock bands.In all the changes, God remains the same. While it’s important to honor God with our whole lives, including what we wear. Clothing is about our outward appearance. God is concerned with our inward appearance. He cares about what’s going on in our spirit. Take care of that first.
