Dear Pastor Lily,
Is it okay for my Christian boyfriend to go drinking with non-Christian guy friends without me?
-Katie. Nova Scotia, Canada.
Here’s the quick answer to your question.
No, it’s not okay. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. When we drink we let down our guard, and the temple becomes vulnerable. Since the Holy Spirit is always with us we must always be guarding the temple.
You are not his pastor. Or his mother. Or his probation officer. And you’re not his wife yet.
So you’re in a tight spot when it comes to trying to correct him.
If this kind of behaviour is a deal breaker for the relationship, then he should know that and you can end it.
If it’s not, then you’re going to have to lead by example. You have to role model it rather then telling him what to do and not do.
You simply acknowledge the outing by saying;
“Did you have fun?”
Maybe he had a terrible time and the Holy Spirit convicted him in the bar.
If he creates an opening for it you can tell him why you choose not to drink. Otherwise let it go. He’s a baby Christian. A lot of these things come with maturing and it doesn’t happen over night.
Practice peace, forgiveness and love.
So that’s my answer to your question Katie.
