Naomi’s instructions in Chapter 3 help transform Ruth from beggar to bride in this rags to riches story. This chapter contains special spiritual lessons that every modern Christian woman can learn from.
Chapter 3 of the book of Ruth is where things get hot and heavy. Ruth puts Boaz on the spot and asks the question every couple needs to discuss, “Where is this relationship going?
His response is music to every woman’s ears.
So let’s take a good look at how it all came about.

Following Naomi’s Instructions
Its easy to think that Ruth had a big crush on Boaz and had been thinking about ways to flirt and catch his attention for a long time. But the Bible tells that Ruth and Boaz getting married was actually Naomi’s idea.
Ruth 3: 1-4
One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. 2 Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. 3 Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”
Remember back in Chapter 1 of the book of Ruth, that Naomi had discouraged the two girls Ruth and Orpah from following her because she thought they would never find husbands in Bethlehem.
Clearly Noami took her role as Mother-in-Law very seriously because she was still serious about helping Ruth find a suitable husband. She has been thinking about this extensively over the last few months, and has developed a strategy that will get Ruth hitched.
Get a second opinion.
This is important because too often when young women are looking to get married, they want to do it all on their own. And that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on them. And it’s a relatively new idea, that people should couple up without any input or direction from outside sources.
Usually, the only consultation a modern couple gets is when they hire a wedding planner. And that’s
Spiritual lessons from the Book of Ruth Chapter 3:
Know when to follow directions
Now, I’m not saying you need to let someone else pick your husband for you. In fact, I think that’s a dangerous practice in today’s society. I believe that you should have the freedom to choose your husband and that you need to take full responsibility for that choice.
Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in life; topped only by whether or not you will follow Christ.Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in life; topped only by whether or not you will follow Christ. Because here’s the thing. You’re choosing the person you will have to lay down beside every night for the rest of your life. This is the person your children will have to call Daddy.
Your kids don’t get to pick their father. That’s your choice!
And you’ve got to take it seriously.
So with such a serious decision, we should never be afraid or reluctant to run it by someone else.
Now, along with the wonderful advice to go after Boaz, Naomi also gives Ruth some good suggestions on the laws of attraction.
Now remember, Ruth is a widow, and she might not have still been wearing clothes that identified her as one who is in mourning. Naomi gives her permission to let go of the past, put on her best dress, do up her hair, and get out there.
Maybe you’ve been struggling to let go of a previous relationship.
Perhaps it’s hard to let go of the one who got away. Or you might still be soothing a broken heart.
But if it’s been a while, and you’re ready to try again, consider this your permission slip to go for it.
Go ahead and get back out there.
If you want to find love and be happily married, you’re going to have to take a huge leap of faith and go for it.
Naomi’s Instructions to Ruth
Next, I want you to notice that Naomi has done a little research on Boaz. She knows where he is going to be and she has a strategy in place to get Ruth into the right place at the right time.
The Thrashing F
First of all, she chooses the setting carefully: The thrashing Floor.
Now what’s so special about the thrashing floor?
Naomi understands a man’s brain. The thrashing floor is an ideal setting because Naomi wants to set Boaz up to feel successful. Instead of inviting Boaz over to their tiny little house where he would feel embarrassed by their lack, Naomi directs Ruth to go see Boaz on his turf.
Timing is everything in this chapter. Naomi has waited until the end of the harvest season., when Boaz is enjoying the blessings of an abundant harvest.
Boaz is there on the trashing floor, finishing the
Boaz is relaxed, but he’s not off duty. He is there overnight protecting his property from potential thieves. He is in a public place, so Ruth will be able to go in without any issue, but under the cover of darkness they can enjoy a private moment.
Protect + Provide
Naomi, in her wisdom and experience dealing with her own
So here’s what you should take away from that.
If you want to marry someone who will be a successful protector and provider for you, start by looking for someone who is already capable of doing that.
This means, dating men who are employed! He doesn’t have to be the CEO of the company, but he should be reasonably capable of taking care of himself and have an eye towards the future.
This will look different at various stages of life. Obviously, by the time you reach the age of
Because let me assure you, that there is nothing wrong with having reasonable expectations. This doesn’t mean that you’re high maintenance, because as we saw in chapter 2, a woman should be able to take care of herself as well.
When two hard working individuals pull together, they can achieve massive success in every area of their lives. When two hard-working individuals pull together, they can achieve massive success in every area of their lives. Click To Tweet
So, if you’re a hard working woman, looking to make a difference in the world, find a hard working man. That way, you’ll both be encouraging one another to do your best.
There’s Something About Feet
Finally, Naomi instructs Ruth to do something that seems really odd. Especially by today’s standards.
Now, there’s been a lot of debate about what this means among the scholars. Some say that this suggests that she exposed him because feet can stand for gentiles, and therefore suggesting that Ruth seduced Boaz.
Others say that it means she was humbling herself to the position of a servant. Because servants had the right to lie at their masters feet and have that little bit of the blanket.
Personally, after looking at the various arguments, I believe that this was neither degrading, nor sexual. I believe that it was both intimate and modest.
After all, both Ruth and Boaz were known for their outstanding moral character. And it’s highly unlikely that Naomi would have encouraged Ruth to do something that was inappropriate. Remember, they were in a public place.
Leave it up to him.
Naomi’s final instructions were for Ruth to leave everything after that up to Boaz. He would recognize symbolism of Ruth’s gesture and would be able to make a decision on what to do next.
The only thing Ruth was obligated to do was to put herself out there. Let her intentions be known.
I hear women saying that you should never pursue a man. And that’s fine. But there’s a time and a place when a woman has to be clear about what she wants.
If Ruth had played shy, or if she had refused to follow Naomi’s instructions and go and tell Boaz what she wants, she would never have enjoyed the blessings of a beautiful marriage.
Here’s the thing. You don’t have to pursue a man to attract a man. Flowers don’t move, but they attract bees. They don’t chase after bees but they also refuse to hid their beauty.
Be like a flower!
