The Formation Of Soul Ties
Soul ties are a gift from God. He uses them to help us to commit to one another. To stand firm and bring things through to completion. God wants us to be connected to one another so that we can live out His divine will for our lives. Their rightful purpose is to promote wholesome unit and oneness in the body of Christ. They are the natural by-product of our relationships. Let’s explore the different ways they are created. I will show you how soul ties are formed in a godly way and then reveal how Satan twists and perverts them.
Soul Ties Are Formed Biologically
Our Primary soul ties are biological. Through our bloodline, we are tied to those who came before us and will come after us. We should have the strongest ties to our most immediate family members. Parents – child relationships are designed by God to last.
God commissioned us to “Be fruitful and Multiply” – Genesis 1:28
We are created as such helpless babies, completely dependant on the love, care and attention of our parents. The desire to have children is so strongly implanted within us that Rachel cries out “Give Me Children, Or else I will DIE!” – Genesis 30:1
So we can see that this is a strong God-given desire. God planned for us to be incredibly devoted to our families. Otherwise, it would be easy for children to be abandoned, and the elderly to be neglected.
Unfortunately, Satan has been busy from the beginning, trying to negate the importance of family ties.
Satan is eager to attack the family unit and one of his earliest moves was to get siblings to be jealous of one another an ultimately commit the first murder.
Soul ties aren’t only about who you’re connected to, it’s also about how and why you’re connected.
Consider how abortion plays into this. A woman rejects and murders her offspring prior to birth. But there is a connection between the two that is stronger than life and death. This is why so many women are overcome with depression, pain, and mourning after choosing to end their pregnancy.
Please Note: If you’re experiencing the regret and pain as a result of having an abortion, I pray that you will go and seek compassionate counsel from a trusted spiritual advisor. It is not my intention to put pressure on a pain point, but bring light to an area of darkness. In today’s world, far too many women feel that having an abortion truly is their only option. God does not want you to live with guilt shame and condemnation. In Jesus there is freedom and forgiveness.
Soul Ties Are Formed Socially
We create amazing things, because we are social creatures. God wanted us to live in harmony with one another. Looking out for our fellow man. Protecting the innocent and vulnerable. He wanted us to be able to see ourselves in our neighbor. God loves when we are willing to share each other’s burdens.
Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
We wouldn’t be able to even consider this kind of love for one another if not for the presence of soul ties.
Of course, we can also see how Satan has effectively made a mess of these ties.
Connecting us to the wrong people through gangs, cults and click. He seduces young people to believe that being included in social groups is the ultimate and only goal in life, and to be excluded is so painful that you succumb to the lie that life just isn’t worth living.
Soul Ties Are Formed Emotionally
Many soul ties are forge out of share experiences and emotions. Consider Ruth and Naomi. Their mutual lose, mourning and grief impacts Ruth to such an extent that she decides to cut her biological and social ties to her past and form a deep connection to her Mother in law, Naomi.
Ruth declares to Naomi “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” Ruth 1:16
She has made a commitment and we see how God uses these moments of revelation to weave outsiders into His family tapestry.
On the other hand, we’ve got Satan, doing his best to get us emotionally tied up in the wrong people who will ultimately bring us to our own destruction.
We all know that if we’re headed downhill, there’s no way to get there faster than to bring someone else down with us.
I’m sure you can think of countless examples where you did the something that went against your better judgment because that’s what everyone else was doing. When we talk about peer pressure, what we are essentially talking about is soul ties. People are so connected to their peer group that they no longer have the desire to act independently. We’re going to go deeper into the dangers of all these negative trappings next week.
Soul Ties Are Formed Spiritually
We are spiritual beings, who learn best through relationship. God gave us the ability to impart, wisdom, knowledge, skill and spiritual gifts to one another. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of mentor-mentee relationships. This is God’s primary vehicle for transferring information. We’ve got; Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, Paul and Timothy, and most importantly Jesus and His disciples.
God’s model for education is a spiritual one. What we impart to one another matters.
God expected us to share His words and commanded us “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” Deuteronomy 11:19.
Yet Satan uses this vehicle too and takes us wildly off course.
When this important relationship is corrupted we see evidence of picking up other people’s bad habits, false ideologies, and toxic mindsets. Instead of instructing each other in the ways of the Lord, societies become flooded with corrupt systems of thinking.
Soul Ties Are Formed Physically
Probably the most well-known method of creating a soul tie is physically. Soul ties are formed through sexual activity.
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24
God created us with an intense desire for oneness, to be known by another person, to be seen, loved and appreciated. These desires are designed to be fulfilled through marriage and the sexual union between a husband and his wife. We come together physically and bring forth new life!
Satan spoiled it.
Now we see this holy and beautiful entwining of two separate and distinct people becoming one, being used to sell everything from cars to cigarettes. We defiled the wedding bed. We no longer appreciate the sanctity of marriage. We’ve turned people into commodities so that we can buy and sell, manipulate and abuse them. People find themselves losing count of the number of sexual interactions they’ve had, and their desires are becoming more violent, destructive and perverted.
Soul ties Are Not Indestructible
Soul ties are formed in other ways as well, mentally, culturally, etc. I have provided enough insight that you are now able to connect the dots.
Now you can see additional ways in which soul ties are meant to unite us for the glory of God, and how Satan has used them to bind us.
Many of our primary relationships that ought to be good, holy, supportive, caring and nurturing have been destroyed or tangled by our sins and the work of the enemy.
We have permitted negative soul ties to creep in and bind us.
God designed soul ties for our good. You also know how Satan has taken advantage and succeeded in knotting the lines. Now be encouraged, because there is a solution.
Jesus came to set the captives free.
Next week we will discuss dangers of ungodly soul ties.
